On Thursday, September 26th, on the Menifee campus, University of California Los Angeles Astrophysics Professor, Eric Becklin shared the dynamics of a colossal black hole he had a hand in discovering. He also went into detail about his experiences in his 58 year long career as an astrophysicist through building equipment and his discoveries.
It was a “super duper interesting” presentation filled with answers but left the audience with even more questions.
Through the presentation Dr. Becklin gave background on the beginning of his career. He recounted experiences with working with other astronomers and astrophysicists to build extremely advanced telescopes, which made ground breaking discoveries like out of reach sections of other galaxies were visible.
The groundbreaking telescope is what was used when the gargantuan black hole focused on in the presentation was discovered.
He focused on the “hows” and “whys” of the black hole. Addressing topics such as its gravitational pull, how it got there, what’s keeping it there, and many others during the informative presentation.
