Active Minds Club is Changing the Conversation Around Mental Health

Mental health is a serious concern for students. The Active Minds club is helping address these issues. Active Minds is a non-profit organization that advocates for mental health and encourages dialogue. MSJC’s chapter of Active Minds was recently re-chartered by the club’s new president, Laila Akberzie.

The Active Minds Club is centered on changing the conversation about mental health. Its meetings inform students about resources and facts and provide a safe space for discussion.

The first club meeting was a roundtable discussion of the club members’ personal experiences.

The last meeting in March featured a guest speaker from Student Health Services, who informed students of the resources on campus and discussed tips for balancing school work with mental health needs.

The next meeting will be via Zoom on April 9th at 1:30. The club will host a guest speaker who will discuss drunk, drugged, or distracted driving awareness. The link can be found in the clubs section of the MSJC website under Student Life and Development.

Finally, the event they are most excited about will be the Canvas and Chamomile event. It will be hosted on May 7th at the Menifee Campus at 1:30 in room 409. The event will provide students with painting supplies and chamomile tea, creating a relaxing and safe space to socialize with peers and aid in creating support systems between them.

Active Minds is incredibly adamant about getting involved in the lives of MSJC students. They provide a safe space for students wanting to learn more about mental health and engage with other students to create valuable support structures.

Hello! My name is Matthew Sanders. I am majoring in Political Science. I have a passion for understanding the intersection of governments and the global economy. I want to analyze how our everyday lives are shaped by our relationship to politics. I have the goal of going to graduate school and eventually breaking into higher education. I hope that through the Talon I can highlight stories, events, and people that can both bring awareness to issues and highlight people’s successes and good works.
