We are amidst midterms and approaching finals. Life is a washing machine, and you are a shoe inside of it. Let’s remember to take time to appreciate the beautiful things in life, including movies and film! These films have visually stunning cinematography; many have inspiringly unconventional stories to share. Here are some classic rewatches and hopefully a few new finds.
Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
A cult classic musical that pushed far past the boundaries of 1970s film and an amusing twist on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
Heathers (1988)
Heathers is peak 1980s dark humor. A must-watch for Winona Ryder fans and a gentle homage to J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye.
Phantom of the Opera (2004)
You don’t need to go to the theater to watch this musical (although you should). The Phantom of the Opera is a dramatic film about love, obsession, and the theater.
Breakfast on Pluto (2005)
Breakfast on Pluto follows the adventures of St. Kitten, a young transgender woman who longs to reunite with her biological mother but encounters many obstacles.
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
A heartfelt critique of urbanization and corporate capitalism. It is also an encouraging story of the strength of community and family.
The Love Witch (2016)
The Love Witch is a famously controversial film about femininity and its insatiable pursuit of true love.
