The Lady Eagles extended their winning streak to eight games last night with a dominant 107-63 victory over College of the Desert. The team entered the matchup with an impressive 11-3 record and a six-game winning streak, led by sophomore guard Princess McCauley and Freshman guard Kohen Marshall, who has been averaging 11.6 and 11.5 points per game, respectively.
In their previous game against Rio Hondo, the Lady Eagles built a strong lead, going ahead 34-20 at halftime and 53-34 after three quarters. However, the team faced a fourth-quarter challenge, scoring only six points while Rio Hondo mounted a comeback. Despite the late-game pressure, the Eagles held on for a narrow 59-56 victory, marking their sixth consecutive win. Princess McCauley led the charge with 19 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Laisha Lazu showcased her defensive prowess with 19 rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. Kohen Marshall contributed 13 points in the victory.
Against College of the Desert, the Lady Eagles delivered an even more commanding performance and continued their impressive streak. Laisha Lazu, the 6’1” sophomore from Vista Murrieta High School, was unstoppable, recording 30 points and 21 rebounds—her third consecutive game with at least 19 boards. Princess McCauley added 16 points and eight rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds that led to critical second-chance points. Three other Eagles scored in double figures: Kohen Marshall with 16 points, sophomore guard Drasoni Kyles with 13, and sophomore forward Vika Afungia with 11.
The Eagles dominated the boards, pulling down 41 offensive rebounds and converting many into points. Trinity Skinner contributed 11 rebounds, and Vika Afungia added 12. Sophomore guard Melissa Castro orchestrated the offense with seven assists and anchored the defense with four steals, further pressuring College of the Desert into turnovers.
Despite their best efforts, College of the Desert, fielding a squad of only five players, struggled to keep pace with the Eagles’ high-energy offense and relentless defense. The visitors managed their best quarter in the fourth, scoring 22 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Eagles’ commanding lead.
The Lady Eagles will look to continue their winning streak in their next two road games: against Barstow on Saturday, January 11, and San Bernardino Valley College on Wednesday, January 15. They will then return home to host Cerro Coso at MSJC on Saturday, January 18, at 1:00 pm. Don’t miss your chance to cheer on this exciting, fast-paced team as they aim for victory!
