The new movie Minecraft has started a trend of quotable jokes that audiences have been shouting aloud during the movie, causing them to throw candy, popcorn, and drinks all over the theater. This has led to theaters needing to tighten up security and post warnings about the consequences of doing such acts during the movie.
Although it has been a big hit in theaters since its release as an adaptation from the hit video game, the trend has been spreading like wildfire over social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X. The article Minecraft movie prompts ‘annoying’ cinema trend that viewers claim is ‘ruining’ the film by Louis Chilton states that these new events are ruining the experience for everybody. “Several videos captured by cinemagoers show audiences chanting the line with Black, before whooping and clapping loudly.” Chilton is referring to the infamous “Chicken Jockey” line, which has been the main reason behind these acts. Samuel Goodwin, who went and saw the movie towards the beginning of its release date, said that he too had a theater with outbursts towards this scene. “There were a little yells here and there, but when that line hit, everything turned to yells and standing ovations for about 30 seconds or so.”

While some have found it annoying, others are glad that people are back to having interactions like this in the theatre, not just sitting in silence, occasionally sharing a laugh or two. Michael Wood, who attended the movie, felt strongly about the theater yelling and ovations. “I thought it was great. It was really fun to cheer and yell for great moments during the movie, and create moments with other strangers I only met in the theater during the movie”. These yelling and cheering moments have even led to theaters telling their crews when the infamous chicken jockey line will happen for each showtime, and letting their crews prepare for the potential mess and cleanup once the movie concludes.
Many people have decided to watch the movie from the comfort of their homes and avoid taking their children to go see this film because they don’t wanna risk popcorn getting thrown on them or being on edge from probable yelling and ovations. If that isn’t your thing, then this isn’t a bad idea because doing this would take the risks away and not make you feel like you wasted money on a ticket for an unpleasant movie experience. While all these events have been happening, the producers and company behind the movie (Warner Bros) have yet to make a claim or statement on the film’s reaction and audience.
While Minecraft is a great movie for people of all ages, the reactions of others and the atmosphere of certain theaters might ruin the experience for many people. Some might just choose to watch the movie at home and miss out on the loud theaters and rowdy atmosphere.
