MSJC begins Undocumented Student Action Week

SAN JACINTO, Calif. — Mt. San Jacinto College, along with California Community Colleges across the state, recognize the week of Oct. 19, 2020 as this year’s Undocumented Student Action Week.

According to the Community College League of California, the USAW is a “system-wide campaign to advocate and provide support resources for our undocumented student population.”

The initiative encourages community colleges in California to raise awareness for the cause and advocate with programs and events for the week.

Here are the events students may look forward to at MSJC:

Mt. San Jacinto College, junto con los colegios comunitarios de California en todo el estado, reconocen la semana del 19 de octubre de 2020 como la Semana de Acción de Estudiantes Indocumentados de este año.

Según la Liga de Colegios Comunitarios de California, la USAW es una “campaña de todo el sistema para defender y proporcionar recursos de apoyo para nuestra población de estudiantes indocumentados”.

La iniciativa alienta a los colegios comunitarios de California a crear conciencia sobre la causa y promover programas y eventos de la semana.

Monday, October 19

Week of Action Kick-Off Event (via Youtube) | 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Featured keynote speaker Julio Salgado and music from Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi.

Julio Salgado is the co-founder of DreamersAdrift, a project that uses art, videography, poetry and other forms of media to raise awareness for undocumented students. Salgado is also the Migrant Storytelling Manager for The Center of Cultural Power and the co-creator of The Disruptors Fellowship.

The Disruptors Fellowship is an inaugural fellowship dedicated to developing a community for emerging trans and/or non-binary television writers who are disabled, undocumented and/or formerly undocumented immigrants.

Salgado’s work has been displayed at the Oakland Museum, SFMOMA and Smithsonian.

Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles is the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi band and advocates for the acceptance of gay, lesbian, and transgender people in the music world.

The band is led by Carlos Samaniego and features Natalia Melendez, the first transgender female in mariachi history, in their ensemble of talented musicians. Mariachi Arcoiris has performed on Univision and has also been featured in several news and media outlets such as NPR, the Los Angeles Times, and Billboard Magazine. They have performed at several Pride events in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oceanside and South Bay as well as the #SchoolsNotPrisons tour for the California Endowment.

Undocumented Students in California (via YouTube) | 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The Training Occupational Development Educating Communities Legal Center begins their first workshop for the week discussing opportunities and resources for undocumented students in California. The workshop is available as a livestream on YouTube.

Financial Aid Workshop (via Zoom) | 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

MSJC’s Financial Aid department will lead a Zoom workshop on how to apply for aid as an undocumented student and answering financial aid questions.

TODEC Legal Center is holding a workshop with information on legal immigration rights, deportation prevention, citizenship, state laws, DACA renewals, Family Plans, Immigration Screening, and Caregiver Affidavit.

This panel will focus on employees at MSJC and will feature current and former MSJC students to share their experiences as undocumented students.

Winners of the Dreamers Poetry & Art Contest for September 2020 will be announced. The winners will be listed on MSJC’s “Week of Action” page.
