The Young Democratic Socialists Club is looking for new members

What is the Young Democratic Socialists of America?

Rose Stacy, YDSA Club President

YDSA club is coming to MSJC, and is looking for new members to be a part of this community.  What is Young Democratic Socialists of America? The Young Democratic Socialists believe that working people should run both the economy and society democratically to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few.  YDSA shows their commitment to this principle by being an organization of, by, and for the working class.

If you rely on wages from an employer -If you sell your labor to them- you are the working class.  Without the working class, nothing is produced, nothing runs, nothing moves.  This fact gives the working class an incredible amount of power and leverage over the Capitalist class that tries to squeeze as much labor from us as they can for the least amount of compensation. That is the foundation of Capitalism.

Democratic Socialists want to unite the working class to exercise the power we have from both being essential to society and from our far greater numbers to enact changes that will benefit normal people, not the rich and powerful.  But the scope of our influence doesn’t just end at labor and working conditions, when united we can use our power for change in all areas of our society that will benefit the many, not just the few:  Medicare-for-all, college-for-all, reproductive rights, a Green New Deal to save our planet, opposing systemic racism and intolerance toward the LGBTQ+ community, and many other issues that are symptoms of inequality and oppression.

Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) is the youth and student section of the Democratic Socialists of America, and a national organization of recognized campus chapters. We are students and staff organizing in our universities, colleges, and high schools to fight for the immediate needs of workers and students while building our capacity to fight for more radical and structural changes.

YDSA is a political and activist organization, not a party; through campus chapters, YDSA members use a variety of tactics, from legislative to direct action, to fight for reforms that empower working people.

Why is this so important right now?  Because we’re all feeling the effects of economic inequality now more than ever: wages not keeping pace with inflation, rising housing and food costs, and price gouging by the big oil companies.  It’s strange then that, earlier this year, the chairman of the US Federal Reserve Jerome Powel said that he believes workers currently have too much power, that our wages are “running too high” and that his goal is to bring wages down and increase unemployment.  By increasing unemployment, the hope is to make people desperate enough to accept lower wages and worse working conditions, weakening their bargaining power.  This is the Capitalist playbook:  A society where the gold vaults of the elite minority at the top overflow while the rest of us struggle to feed our families, house ourselves, and put gas in the tank to even go to work.

If you feel that there is something very wrong with this system, if you want to join the fight for a better, more hopeful future, you have a place among us.
