Open Mic Night Presented by Creative Writing Club

Calling all MSJC Creatives Near and Far!

Come one come, all to an unforgettable display of creativity by our very own MSJC Eagles! Once every month, the Creative Writing Club hosts an open mic/ karaoke night for anyone willing to participate and show off their creative masterpieces or for audience members curious to watch. The most recent one was held on April. 9 at 6 p.m. in room 413.

At this two-hour event, artistically eager eagles showcased their talents, from playing instruments, debuting musical works, or reciting crafted poetry. This event upholds an extremely fun and supportive environment, with peers in the audience as attentive, excited, and supportive for every act. Performances ranged from serious displays of expressiveness to acts done for the sake of having fun and laughing with peers.

At the event held on April. 9, the night started with poetry, original musical performances, and a screamo cover of “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift. The final act was a tone-deaf group cover of “I Want It That Way” by legendary 90s boyband the Backstreet Boys.

For the past few years, the Creative Writing Club has continued its tradition of hosting an open mic/ karaoke night at one of the three campuses for artists to come and present their craft. It’s a full house every month, with people having to sit on the floor or lean against the wall.

“The goal with open mic is to get people to share their artistic talent in front of an audience. Really get that experience because when you go in the real world, and you have to do that in front of talent agents or people that have money it’s a lot more challenging, a lot more daunting. Events like these get people to practice and help get rid of that anxiety or any shyness they have.” Alice Remero, president of creative writing club.

The next open mic night is being held on May 14 at the TVC at 6 p.m. (a room has yet to be confirmed). So, if you need to belt out a song, play an instrument, share some poetry, or perform any other creative endeavors, the creative writing club open mic night is for you!
