On the morning of September 12, 2025, the community of Palm Springs got together to dedicate a fountain in honor of Heidi Anderson, the lead Nurse at Desert Regional Medical Center for over three decades. This fountain will serve as a reminder of her enduring legacy for all who walk by.
On a bright desert morning, friends, family, and colleagues gathered at Desert Regional Medical Center’s Hanson House to commemorate Heidi Anderson’s life of service, reflecting on her dedication as a nurse leader who spent her years as a patient advocate, as well as bringing innovation to the Level 1 trauma center. The fountain, placed next to the entrance of the Hanson House, is both a reminder of her commitment to those most vulnerable and the impact of her loss a year later.
The dedication ceremony began at 10:00 a.m. on September 12, 2025, in the Hanson house courtyard. Walking in, it was evident that the hospital staff worked hard, as the space was set up with rows of white chairs, floral decorations, portraits of Heidi Anderson, and a table of coffee with a variety of muffins for the attendees to enjoy.

Once everyone was seated Vicki Gandolfo, Anderson’s partner of 31 years began with a heartfelt speech, noting Andresons compassion and dedication to all around her expressing, ” Those of us who knew her, worked with her, learned from her, loved her, we saw that quiet strength, the deep compassion, and the fierce dedication that she brought to everything she did.”
These touching words were followed by a poem presented and written by Dr. Paz, whom Heidi regarded as a friend and mentor. They referred to each other as their “work wife and husband.” Dr. Paz profoundly embodies Anderson’s character in his poem, where one section notes, “Heidi, a steady compass in the storm, where traumas tempo rattles and reform, you moved with calm through fear and fire, a beacon of care, of steadfast desire.” As the speeches ended, everyone was advised to grab one rose petal out of a bowl and to walk to the location of the fountain, as it was time to unveil it. Everyone holding their petals, circles around the entrance of the Hanson house to quietly watch the staff swipe away the tarp, revealing a rectangular fountain with a stone outline and an interior of Spanish-style tile with the middle structure expelling water into the air, bringing attention to the plaque above stating ‘Heidi K Anderson, RN, Sept 6, 1964-Sept. 2024, Heidi’s Dedication, Kindness, And Humor Were A Gift TO US ALL’. Everyone threw their petals in the water, took a moment of silence, and went on with their day, holding the love, hope, and care that Anderson displayed every day of her life.

Anderson, who began working at Desert Regional Medical Center 38 years ago, quickly found her life’s purpose as a nurse, progressing from the emergency room to a supervisor/manager. Anderson was a trailblazer in rebuilding the Level 1 trauma center, where every two years in her position as a lead nurse and Supervisor, she spearheaded the trauma department’s preparation for its accreditation by the state, which takes a year to do. With steadfast effort, she consistently hit that goal, thanks to strong leadership and the backing of a loyal team. She also established herself as a patient advocate by holding a fundraiser and organizing a concert each year so the Hanson house could continue to thrive. Heidi’s contributions extend beyond her years as a nurse, as she played a vital role in her family as an aunt, sister, and partner. When talking with her brother Hank Anderson, he looked back on her humor, intelligence, and loyalty, mentioning, “Heidi was the one family member that everyone went to for advice, whether it was personal or health related, she knew what to do, she was our rock.” Heidi Anderson’s fountain is a reminder of her
The impact on this earth will guide generations of nurses to come, as Paz declares in his poem, “Your legacy lingers in the breath of the chosen.”
