Local Hiking: The Good and The Bad

Local+Hiking%3A+The+Good+and+The+Bad

Hiking is one of the oldest and most used forms of exercise. Whether you want to get into shape through walking or running, hiking is a great way to do this. It allows you to get into the outdoors and connect with nature. However, along with amazing benefits, hiking also has setbacks and issues.

Hiking has been around for years but is becoming increasingly popular through social media and the rise of fitness as a trend. This has attracted many more people to participate in it recently. Hiking is an amazing way to exercise because it is like most other cardio-based exercises, but it is a total body workout that builds muscle. It can be hard on your body if you’re climbing mountain trails with excessive obstacles, but it is usually joint-friendly. It also allows you to be out in the sun, providing vitamin D for your body. It can also be a new way of walking your dogs, bringing more benefits like bonding and feeling safer while hiking. All while giving both you and your animal mental stimulation.

With all these beneficial reasons for hiking, there must be more warnings of what could go wrong and how to prevent it. Wild animals and harmful plants like poison ivy can make hikes dangerous. Poison ivy or oak is easy to miss or mistake for non-dangerous plants. Touching the skin causes irritation and rashes from the oil on the plant. Knowing what they look like is important to stay away from these plants. They have three leaves, and poison oak has rounder tips.

Dangerous animals to look out for are mountain lions and especially now rattlesnakes. Mountain lions stalk their prey and kill quickly, but attacks are rare. To prevent issues with a mountain lion, hike with friends and learn how to protect yourself. It is rattlesnake season, which brings major risks to hikers and their dogs. To identify a rattlesnake, look for a blotched pattern with a rattle on the tail. They are found in rocky areas and dry brushlands. Stay alert, wear appropriate clothing like boots and pants, and only hike on well-used trails with no tall grass or underbrush to prevent an attack.

Everyone should have the essentials for the safest and best possible hike. Always bring water and food, especially calorie-dense foods that fuel you. Wear proper outerwear like rain gear and appropriate footwear like hiking boots. Tools and knives are important to keep yourself safe and prepared. Sun protection is important to prevent sunburn or hurting your eyes. Objectively, The most important thing to bring is a first aid kit to treat cuts and other injuries.

All in all, hiking is a great way to exercise and spend time. Whether alone, with friends, or with an animal, knowing how to stay safe is important in having a good hike. It is important to have the essentials needed to keep your needs met.
